SAN DIEGO — At the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, Henrik Malchau, MD, PhD, spoke about results of a multicenter study of total hip replacement with highly crosslinked polyethylene and standard diameter ceramic or cobalt chrome femoral heads. He said at a minimum of 13 years’ follow-up, the wear of irradiated and melted highly crosslinked polyethylene articulating against cobalt chrome and ceramic femoral heads remained at levels lower than the detection limit of the software.  Additionally, the researchers did not identify osteolysis up to 16-year radiographic follow-up.
