Print and electronic media can provide tremendous value to an orthopedic surgeon’s life by enhancing the ability to stay up-to-date on patient care, current issues, outcomes, opinions and challenges. Orthopedics Today recently pursued the opinions and perspectives of our readers to better understand their changing informational needs and how we can better communicate content that makes a difference in the professional and personal lives of orthopedic surgeons.

We asked readers for their opinions, and as a result, Orthopedics Today has a new look, clear organization, improved visuals and a tighter focus on the professional, scientific and personal issues that affect orthopedic surgeons every day. As you will notice with this issue of Orthopedics Today, we enhanced the look of the publication, stimulating visual and tactile senses with a crisper, cleaner look with larger fonts, more clinical photos and radiographs. We know readers want to instantly see key features and images that spark their thoughts and imaginations. However, the attractive redesign is just the first noticeable enhancement.

Current issues, perspectives

As the only independent source of orthopedic news, commentary, in-depth analysis of controversial topics, novel surgical techniques and technology insight, Orthopedics Today and its website Healio.com/Orthopedics provide insightful and critical analysis of today’s most important issues of musculoskeletal care. We bring perspective from the leaders in the field, surgical technique articles and live meeting coverage to the forefront of the news. We also take readers beyond just news, with original, in-depth reporting on current issues that are critical concerns of orthopedic surgeons.

In the Cover Story, we feature in-depth coverage of key issues that impact not only orthopedic surgeons, but also ancillary professionals who provide orthopedic care. The balanced and fair reporting style is complemented by multiple opinions and an editorial process to enlighten the understanding of key issues. We want to focus on the orthopedic surgeon’s perspective and provide facts and opinions from thought leaders to improve knowledge in critical areas.

Insight and analysis

Our popular In the Journals section is more prominent, providing summaries of key research from the top peer-reviewed journals in orthopedics, often accompanied with perspective from experts who provide greater insight. Surgical Technique articles provide step-by-step approaches, illustrated with radiographs and surgical photos, representing core procedures, as well as new or novel procedures that can be used to treat challenging cases and improve patient care. In Meeting News,Orthopedics Today editorial staff report on research presented at the top orthopedic meetings held around the world — live from the podium, including perspective from experts who provide additional viewpoints.

Special features include more in-depth analysis of musculoskeletal problems that affect us every day. Whether in an Orthopedics Today Grand Rounds,Round Table, At Issue or Point-Counter discussion, orthopedic surgeons share their insights and recommendations that lead to their desired patient outcomes. The Commentary brings attention to current and often controversial concerns that orthopedic surgeons have may have heard about, but may have not had time to evaluate and develop their own opinion. The goal is to present an issue, look at facts on both sides of the discussion, provide valuable insight and then encourage a “call to action” so readers can move forward to participate in the debate or challenge themselves. This can be of a professional nature, such as the impact of outpatient total joint arthroplasty, or a personal discussion, such as the need for better life-work balance.

Balance, independence

Our commitment to balanced reporting, independence and editorial excellence will continue to help orthopedic surgeons stay informed on the most-needed updates in our profession, ultimately translating into improved outcomes for patients in our care. I look forward to bringing you more news, insight and analysis of mainstream and controversial topics in orthopedics.
