Study highlights cost of securing a residency position in neurosurgery

Researchers of this study noted the application process for being matched to a residency position in neurosurgery was costly.

Along with the Society of Neurological Surgeons, researchers distributed a 10-question survey to first-year neurosurgery residents in the United States. The survey included questions about the number of subinternships, interviews, “second looks” attended, resultant costs, type of program match, subinternship interview preferences and changes in the application process residents would like to see. Investigators assessed data to determine differences in costs when categorized based on the region of the medical school and when respondents had contact with their matched program before the interview.

Findings showed a 64.4% response rate. Investigators noted the entire application process had a mean total cost of $10,300. The largest proportion of costs for the application process came from the interview expenses. Categorizing the medical schools by quartiles showed no significant differences with regard to the number of subinternships or attended interviews, as well as no differences in subinternship, interview, second look and the total costs. by Monica Jaramillo
