Once again, members of the EFORT community demonstrated their interest in sharing orthopaedic knowledge on a European level. Their submissions for the Congress, which will become the more than 3,000 free papers, posters and clinical cases at the meeting, fall within the three main categories as follows:

Submission chart

The five most popular topics for abstract submissions are as follows:

  • Orthopaedics - Knee & Lower Leg   17%;
  • Orthopaedics - Pelvis, Hip & Femur   17%;
  • Trauma - Hip & Femur   7%;
  • Orthopaedics - Shoulder & Upper Arm   6%; and
  • Trauma - Knee & Lower Leg   4%.

The percentages shown are based on the total number of abstracts received.

The five countries with the most abstract submissions, in order, are the United Kingdom, Portugal, Italy, Spain and Japan.

The main theme of the EFORT Congress in Vienna seems to have captured the attention of submitters from the sports medicine field because there were twice as many abstracts submitted this year related to “Sport Activities & Orthopaedic Practice” than in the past.

Interestingly, the general orthopaedic practice today is focused more on an increasing number of patients who are active in sports and fitness. Therefore, the sports topics at the congress will benefit many orthopaedists beyond those who are solely focused on the management of patients with sports-related conditions. In addition, this trend presents EFORT with new challenges in providing appropriate knowledge and science to stimulate learning and improve the European standard of orthopaedic care.

The submitted abstracts will now by reviewed by expert reviewers under the supervision of the EFORT Scientific Advisors, who will allocate the presentations so all the accepted abstracts will be included in the overall scientific program for the congress.

Abstract submission for the EFORT Congress in Vienna from 31 May–2 June 2017 is now closed. Therefore, authors with a special query about changed author information, updated conflict of interest disclosures, etc., should directly contact the abstract team via email at scicom@efort.org.

On Friday, 27 January 2017, all authors and co-authors will be notified by email about the acceptance status of their submitted abstract(s). At that time, those whose abstracts have been accepted will be given the preliminary schedule for their presentation(s). The presenting author of a selected abstract must undertake to attend the congress and present the abstract in the session and at the time designated by the Scientific Committee. His or her full congress registration must be completed no later than Monday, 27 February 2017. Please visit our registration platform to ensure your participation in the congress.

Good luck to everyone and see you in Vienna.
