The first European orthopaedic summer school held in Faro, Portugal on 22 to 26 August was a success. More than 110 students and 30 faculty members attended the meeting and they represented 20 European countries.

The idea to organize Europe’s first orthopaedic summer school was nurtured for more than 2 years. The concept was that trainees from all over Europe would gather for 1 week to learn from a top-level faculty who had links to the major European subspecialty societies.

This was an ambitious goal because the project had many different parts that needed to work together smoothly. The three simple goals of the school were to learn, network and relax.

Attendees at the FORTE Summer School participated in some outdoor activities. Many of them took a boat trip that was offered one of the days.

The format of the FORTE Summer School was that during the day, two different review courses were offered. One was the Comprehensive Review (basic) and the other course was an Exam Preparation course (advanced). Based on feedback from participants, there was a lot of satisfaction with both courses, as well as with the great faculty and the opportunities for interaction.

dinner and informal discussions
Each day ended with dinner and informal discussions that fostered interactions among attendees. Enric Cáceres Palou, MD, PhD, FRC, immediate past president of the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, spoke at one of the sessions.

Both courses ended early each day to allow for productive networking during the evening programs. These networking opportunities included kayaking, a beach lounge and boat trips that were offered throughout the week. Many students took part in the evening programs.

The program each day ended with dinner and small dinner-time sessions. The dinner-time sessions promoted informal discussion.

It was a great week of learning and bonding between the participants and faculty, which all took place in a great setting that provided an experience that was positive and relaxing. Save these dates for the next edition of the FORTE Summer School, which will be held 21 to 25 August 2017.
