Titan Spine announces ICD-10 code for nanotextured surfaces on interbody fusion devices

Titan Spine reported in a press release that CMS has created a new technology ICD-10 code for a nanotextured surface on an interbody fusion device. According to the release, Titan Spine’s nanoLOCK surface technology has been granted access to use this code.
“We are pleased with the new nanotextured category designation that CMS has created,” Peter Ullrich, MD, chief executive officer of Titan Spine, said in the release. “And I am extremely proud of the entire Titan team who worked tirelessly to create nanoLock surface technology and to procure its code.”
CMS reportedly approved the “interbody fusion device, nanotextured surface” code as an XRG code, which can be used starting Oct. 1, 2016. Other technologies can be added to the code; however, these devices must show equivalence to the nanoLock or demonstrate superiority to other alternatives on the market through CMS-designated processes.
According to the release, it took several steps to obtain the nanotextured code. Titan Spine reportedly completed the CMS new technology procedural coding system application and ICD-10 code request in late 2015. A CMS new technology add-on payment town hall and meeting of a CMS ICD-10 coordination and maintenance committee in early 2016 resulted in the Section X New Technology ICD-10 code.
