British Orthopaedic Association awards Honorary Fellowships to four members

BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND — Stephen Cannon, MCh, Orth, FRCS, MBE, an Orthopaedics Today Europe Editorial Board member, and three other members of the British Orthopaedic Association were awarded Honorary Fellowships from the British Orthopaedic Association on opening day of the organization’s Annual Congress.
Hand surgeon Frank Burke, FRCS, Ian K. Ritchie, FRCS (Orth), and trauma specialist Charles Court-Brown, MD, FRCS (Orth), also received Honorary Fellowships.
Tim J. Wilton, MA, FRCS, British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) president, who presented the awards, said during his presidential welcome speech, “It is my great pleasure to do some delivery and awarding of honors.”
The Honorary Fellowship is the BOA’s highest accolade and award given by the group, he said.
In addition to a clinical focus on and interest in musculoskeletal oncology, Cannon is a past BOA president and has been president of the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology.
Burke, who mentored Wilton, worked or trained in Derby and New Castle, United Kingdom, as well as in Louisville and Iowa City, United States. Today, he is the archivist for the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand.
Ritchie, who is at Edinburgh College, has an interest in surgical training and education, Wilton said. He is past president of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
According to Wilton’s presentation, Court-Brown has done extensive work in tibial nailing and helped develop the first orthoplastic unit in the United Kingdom. – by Susan M. Rapp
