New tool helps enhance patient understanding of orthopedic conditions and treatments

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recently released the Guide to Orthopaedic Surgery apps, according to an academy press release.

The apps are designed to help physicians explain musculoskeletal problems and procedures to patients through easy-to-use visual tools to help them better understand their diagnosis and treatment. The apps, which were co-developed by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and Visual Health Solutions, feature high-quality expert content that reportedly provide endless possibilities to create custom educational and informational products for patients. The apps cover total knee replacement, total hip replacement and ACL reconstruction.

“Rich illustrations, 3-D rotatable models, animations and video help our patients become more involved in their care,” Joel Mayerson, MD, chair of the AAOS Patient Education Committee, said in the release. “These apps allow surgeons to create customized user-friendly preoperative teaching aids for our patients, which can help in their treatment process.”

A free trial of the apps, which are available for use on iPad and both Mac and PC desktops, is available until June 30.
