EFORT Abroad: 34th SICOT Meeting in Hyderabad, India

Under the local organization of Prof. Ashok Johari, Hyderabad hosted the 34th SICOT Orthopaedic World Congress on 17-19 October.

It took place in a modern congress centre and was well organized. Around 2,000 delegates attended the meeting from different parts of the world. Around 90 countries were represented.

The scientific program was well balanced with the contribution of different sections. Two hundred forty speakers from all over the world were present, covering 4 plenary lectures, 47 symposia and instructional courses, 46 free paper sessions, 1 best paper session, 11 short oral presentation sessions and a myriad of electronic posters.

The four plenary speakers were Dr. José Sergio Franco from Brazil (Proximal Humerus Fracture Treatment. Unsolved problem?), Dr. Dror Paley from United States (Implantable Limb Lengthening: Past, Present And Future), Prof. Dr. Steffan Ruchholtz from Germany (Modern Management Of Polytrauma Patients) and Dr. S. Rajasekaran from India (Medicine – For Whose Benefit?).

The Presidential breakfast was a forum for discussion on the topic Violence Against Healthcare Workers. SICOT President Prof. Maurice Hinsenkamp* introduced the topic and initiated the discussion. This problem exists and is becoming more and more visible in different countries, although most of the delegates were not aware of it.

All the delegates involved in the discussion realized that it will be difficult to implement actions in a global way. At least the different organizations should try to alert the authorities in each country and ask the support of WHO to launch a campaign in order to make people aware of this issue.

SICOT organized for the 11th time the “SICOT Diploma Examination,” which was well attended. A Symposium on Orthopaedic Education – How Can SICOT Contribute? was very well attended and became a forum for discussion for all educational activities around the globe. As the President of EFORT I was given a chance to introduce a broad overview of European training in orthopaedics and traumatology. I found that there is a lot of discrepancy in the Asian Pacific area with a wide variation, starting with the time of training and the type of training. Under the moderation of the Congress President Prof. Ashok Johari, several speakers gave their contribution. The focus was mostly on education with emphasis on the curriculum and subspecialty development, but also in different topics like mentorship or congress organization, as an example.

EFORT was also represented at SICOT in the Exhibition Hall with its booth; we promoted our 2014 Annual Congress in London and we encouraged in particular abstract submissions and registrations. Many local and international exhibitors expressed interest in taking part in our upcoming Congress. It was a very interesting meeting, and the warm welcome received from our Indian hosts made it even more enjoyable.
