Contrary to the introduction of new pharmaceuticals, the introduction of joint replacement prostheses is not well regulated. Although a much more controlled market introduction for new prostheses was already proposed by Malchau in 1995, not much has changed in the past 20 years, as shown by the recent failure of hip resurfacing prostheses. The patients, orthopaedic community, regulators, and industry will benefit from an improved market introduction that increases patient safety.
In this symposium, a number of recognized experts and their junior researchers will update you about the state-of-the-art on available techniques that can be used in the safe phased introduction of new joint replacement prostheses.
The experts will give you a broad overview of a certain technique, and their young researchers will provide you with details of a clinical study in which that technique was used. The audience will be invited to get involved in a round table discussion and share their opinions. At the end of the symposium we might or might not agree upon a best approach for the phased introduction of joint replacement prostheses.
