Our understanding of the pathophysiology of the hip joint has improved in recent years, providing more possibilities for conducting joint-preserving hip surgery. There is now a special course program intended to provide state-of-the-art knowledge on the diagnosis of hip problems and their treatment by conservative surgical means.

This first BAT program staged by EHS-EFORT gives orthopaedic surgeons the opportunity to delve more deeply into hip problems in younger patients and into their treatment by conservative surgical means. BAT stands for Basic, Advanced and Traumatology courses. “The program consists of two courses and its emphasis is geared to orthopaedic surgeons who wish to delve more deeply into the subject of hips or who have been doing so for only a relatively short time,” explains course director Dr. Óliver Marín-Peña, from the Department for Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology of Hospital Universitario Infanta Leonor in Madrid. The first of the two courses will be held 5 to 7 March 2014 in Madrid.

There has been an increase in interest in joint-preserving hip surgery worldwide over the past 10 years. The improved understanding of the pathophysiology of the hip joint and new surgical techniques such as hip-joint arthroscopic surgery have led to new capabilities and to a greater need for corresponding education and training opportunities.

The first BAT course consists of four workshops and three live operations broadcast into the course classroom from the operating room. “The course has a definitely practical, practice-based orientation. In the workshops participants have an opportunity for an intensive exchange of experience with renowned experts from throughout Europe,” Dr. Marín-Peña explained.

In the workshop called How to read hip imaging: practical exercises hip images are jointly diagnosed and discussed. Another workshop called Selecting the best treatment option for each hip problem deals with the practical handling of patients suffering from hip disorders. Participants practice preliminary case history (anamnesis) and clinical exams in a realistic setting. Finally, in the workshop entitled Practical exercise (sawbone): correcting the deformity of the hip participants practice corrective techniques on an actual bone specimen. The workshop called Get your access to the hip: portals, instruments and surgical tricks deals with arthroscopic surgery on hips.

Dr. Marín-Peña: “The course provides ample opportunity for participants to familiarize themselves with arthroscopic and open surgical techniques. Expected treatment results will be thoroughly discussed, as will possible complications and how to avoid them. With this ambitious program EFORT intends to do its part to improve the quality of European hip surgery, of course ultimately in the patients’ interest in particular.“

The program then continues with an advanced course that builds on the first course that will be held in August in Bern, Switzerland.
