Similar return-to-sport rates seen for revision ACL reconstruction vs primary reconstruction patients

Results from this study showed patients who underwent revision ACL reconstruction had return-to-sport rates comparable to patients who underwent primary ACL reconstruction; however, return-to-sports rates for revision patients were lower than those reported for patients who underwent ACL reconstruction and did not require revision surgery.

Researchers assessed 109 patients who underwent their first revision ACL reconstruction (ACLR) between March 2006 and March 2010. Within an average follow-up of 4.9 years, 109 patients responded to a sports activity survey. Investigators also obtained the IKDC subjective form score, Marx Activity Scale score and KOOS quality of life (KOOS-QOL) scores. Medical records were used to obtain procedure details.

Results showed 46% of patients were able to return to preinjury level of sport after revision ACLR vs. 50% of patients after they underwent primary ACLR. Investigators noted 54 patients were unable to return to their preinjury level of sport; however, 33% had improved enough to return to their preinjury levels after revision.

According to researchers, patients who were younger had a greater chance of returning to their preinjury level of sports. The return rate was similar between male and female patients. Higher Marx, KOOS-QOL and IKDC scores were seen in patients who returned to their preinjury level of sports.

At the follow-up, patients with 50% thickness articular cartilage lesions during revision had significantly higher Marx, IKDC and KOOS-QOL scores. Return to sport rates were not correlated with meniscus status; however, significantly higher KOOS-QOL scores were seen in patients with an intact meniscus at follow-up. ‒ by Monica Jaramillo
