EFORT

The EFORT Foundation, officially launched at the 10th EFORT Congress in Vienna in June 2009, is a non-profit organization that aims to promote science and research in the fields of orthopaedics and traumatology in order to make progress in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders and injuries. Its educational mission is based on the improvement of the level of orthopaedic and traumatological care throughout Europe by supporting knowledge exchange and training. The financial support the Foundation gives surgeons and researchers includes grants for research projects, fellowships for long and short research visits, as well as for Congress attendance.

With the current need in the orthopaedic community to increase public awareness regarding the importance of research in the development of new surgical technologies and products, a new concept session will be held during the upcoming 17th EFORT Annual Congress in Geneva to provide insight into the EFORT Foundation projects in this regard.

We are therefore pleased to welcome the Chairman EFORT Foundation, Prof. Dr. Karl-Göran Thorngren, and the EFORT Chairman Travelling & Visiting Fellowships, Prof. Dr. Philippe Neyret, as moderators of the EFORT Foundation Symposium.

Nowadays, many guides in different specialties have been assembled to provide information, practical tools, curricular material, and to gather evidence to make health care safer and of higher quality through education and prevention.

Orthopaedic surgery itself has been regularly defined as the specialty of surgery dedicated to prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. Therefore, prevention is an integral part of orthopaedics and it should be actively included in any orthopaedic educational program.

Important areas in which orthopaedic prevention is managed will be addressed in the symposium, such as trauma (accident-related, but also linked to osteoporosis and other systemic disorders), nursing, infection and other surgery complications. Moreover, discussion will focus on the importance of patients’ education, the necessity of knowledge of injury prevention and prevalence of risk factors in sports medicine, and the necessity of an effective psychological prevention, to mention a few.

Proper orthopaedic education also includes an analysis of the medico-economic impact, the harmonization and standardization of practices (techniques, new tools and evaluation) and the possibility to deliver a continuous medical education. In this regard, a presentation about training of fellows in Europe will highlight the significance of both knowledge transfer and the improvement of personal connections.
