Dried plums found effective for prevention of BMD loss in osteopenic postmenopausal women

Investigators of this study found dried plums prevented total body bone mineral density loss in older osteopenic postmenopausal women and that both 50 g and 100 g of dried plum doses were effective in preventing bone loss.
Researchers identified 48 osteopenic postmenopausal women and randomly assigned them to the following treatment groups: 50 g of dried plum; 100 g of dried plum; and 0 g of dry plum. At baseline and 6 months postoperatively, investigators used dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry to evaluate total body, hip and lumbar bone mineral density (BMD), as well as measured osteoprotegerin, receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand, calcium, phosphorous and vitamin D. Also, at baseline, 3 months and 6 months, investigators measured bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BAP), tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP-5b), high-sensitivity C- reactive protein, insulin-like growth factor-1 and sclerostin.

Findings showed both the 50 g of dried plum and 100 g of dried plum prevented total body BMD loss compared with no dose of dried plum. Investigators noted TRAP-5b had decreased at 3 months in both dosed groups and was sustained at 6 months. There were no differences between the 50 g of dried plum and 100 g of dried plum groups with regard to BAP changes; however, at 6 months, the BAP/TRAP-5b ratio was significantly greater in the two dosed groups compared with the control group that received 0 g of dried plum. ‒ by Monica Jaramillo
