BOSTON — At the Arthroscopy Association of North America Annual Meeting, Bradley Jaquith, MD, spoke about predictors for patellar instability after first time dislocation in children and adolescent patients. He said independent predictors included skeletal immaturity, history of contralateral patellar subluxation or dislocation, trochlear dysplasia and excessive patella alta with a Caton-Deschamps index greater than 1.45.
He also said young patients had an 80% chance of recurrence. Patients at high risk of recurrent instability would benefit from early surgery or other alternative interventions.
