By 2050, a 40% increase in the geriatric population will occur in Europe, which represents more than 238 million people who are older than 65-years. Pelvic fractures in this elderly population therefore are expected to have an increased incidence.

Pelvic trauma results in an increased mortality rate due to polypharmacy and multiple patient comorbidities. Pelvic trauma can be difficult to diagnose and exceptionally painful for patients.

During the 16th EFORT Congress held in Prague in 2015, Professor Pol M. Rommens, from Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz (Germany), provided an overview of the major classification and treatment strategies for geriatric pelvic ring fractures.
