Professor Richard Wallensten will be presenting the Erwin Morscher Honorary Lecture at the upcoming 17th EFORT Annual Congress in Geneva on Thursday 2 June 2016 from 12:45 to 13:15 in the Geneva Auditorium. Professor Wallensten’s presentation, entitled “Trainees’ Education in Europe: Current Needs,” will draw upon Wallensten’s extensive clinical and academic experience in Europe, as well as internationally.
Professor Wallensten was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1945. After graduating from high school in 1963, he pursued his studies in medicine at Karolinska Insitutet medical school from 1963 to 1970. Following this, Professor Wallensten became a resident in general surgery from 1970 to 1975, after which he switched to orthopaedic surgery in 1975 and remained in that specialty at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm.
Scientific training in the department of clinical physiology with a short period at the VA San Diego Healthcare System, in La Jolla, Calif., USA, led Professor Wallensten to a PhD thesis, entitled “The Medial Tibial and Chronic Anterior Compartmental Syndromes,” which he completed in 1983. This scientific work earned Professor Wallensten a position as associate professor in orthopaedics at the Karolinska Institute, where he has remained since 1984. Professor Wallensten combines this role with his role as senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, a position he has held since 1991.
Professor Wallensten has held a number of prestigious board positions in Europe during his career, including with the Swedish Orthopaedic Association (SOA). He was SOA secretary for 10 years, was president from 1998 to 2001, and was president of the Swedish Society of Orthopaedic Trauma from 2002 to 2007 and president of the Nordic Orthopaedic Federation from 2006 to 2008.
Clinically, Professor Wallensten’s main interests are shoulder and elbow surgery, hip and pelvic reconstruction and orthopaedic problems in hemophilia, in addition to trauma surgery. Internationally, Professor Wallensten has gained experience in orthopaedics and trauma in Lebanon in 1987, in Iraq in 1988, in Geneva from 1992 to 1993 and in Tanzania in 2005.
On a personal level, Professor Wallensten is married and has four children and six grandchildren.
