VIDEO: Hannafin discusses absorbable vs non-absorbable sutures in meniscal repair

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii — At Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2016, Jo A. Hannafin, MD, PhD, discussed the use of absorbable and non-absorbable sutures in meniscal repair. She said orthopedic surgeons need to balance the strength of the suture, ease with which one puts the suture into the joint and potential long-term complications of the suture.

Hannafin said she is more likely to use absorbable sutures in younger patients as the sutures will dissolve during the course of 90 days, at which time the meniscus should be healed. For older patients, she said she may use a non-absorbable suture. She said time will tell whether the non-absorbable suture is the right tool to use.
