WAIKOLOA, Hawaii — Robert A. Arciero, MD, highlighted a discussion at Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2016 about which autografts and allografts have the best results in ACL reconstruction, particularly in young, active patients. He said the literature and recent research have shown a scientifically proven difference between the use of autograft and allograft in ACL reconstruction, particularly in younger patients. As allograft has been found to have a four-times higher failure rate, orthopedic surgeons should stick with autograft in ACL reconstruction.

Arciero said for autograft type, even though the literature suggests patellar tendon leads to a more stable knee and less need for revision, hamstring graft is still an outstanding graft. He said a number of studies support its use, even in high-demand patients.
