Why a new journal?
The main goal of EFORT is to ensure an education platform is available to all orthopaedic surgeons throughout Europe and also globally. Today’s orthopaedic surgeons are confronted with an information overload. This information is extremely diverse ranging from the vastly general to the highly specialized.
The aim is to provide readers with current concept reviews as seen from the European perspective although authors from around the world will contribute. The reviews published will be peer-reviewed so as to ensure only the highest quality information will be diffused. The reviews will endeavor to reach out to the future examinee, as well as to the general orthopaedist with little time on his or her hand or even to the specialist seeking knowledge in an unfamiliar field. The philosophy adopted will be that EOR provides reviews with accurate and verified information in a concise, readable and accessible format.
Why a new format?
The new format will be Open Access (OA) gold. This signifies that authors will publish their reviews in the traditional fashion, going through a peer-review process. If accepted for publication, the articles will then be freely available to the public.
In the beginning the article processing charge (APC) will be taken over by the publisher so that authors will not be charged for their work. The OA format is particularly well adapted to today’s ever changing and fast paced world of shared knowledge and global communication. The practice of orthopaedics and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system is changing ever so fast because of technological advances, including hardware and software progress, because of an ageing population with escalating demands for remaining active, and because of rising standards of living due to economic growth. To follow these changes our publication formats must be adapted to cope with our fast-paced society. Today’s Open Access is fast, easy to access and free of charge for the readers. The journal will be indexed and hopefully an impact factor may be derived in the coming years.
An enthusiastic, hard-working and critical editorial board will guarantee that only the best reviews and articles reach the screens of computers, tablets and smart phones of our esteemed audience: Orthopaedic surgeons and allied health care providers in the field of musculoskeletal diseases and injuries.
Because the paper format is still vital, there will be a print issue yearly available at the EFORT Congress and dedicated, as in the past, to the Instructional Lectures given at the meeting by foremost specialists in their field.
The Editors and Board Members are looking forward to receiving top quality reviews on topics of interest to general orthopaedic surgeons, trainees and allied health providers, each in their area of expertise, for online publication in the new EFORT Open Reviews, the first of its kind.
