Nexxt Spine LLC recently announced the development of NanoMatrixx, a new porous bioactive titanium material designed to be used in intervertebral fusion.

According to a company release, the NanoMatrixx material has been manufactured to exact specifications using modern 3-D printing technology to replicate the cellular structure of cancellous bone. This differs from traditional orthopedic manufacturing processes, as it can create any 3-D complex structure or geometry with a desired modulus of elasticity, according to the release.

After the manufacturing process is complete, the material undergoes proprietary treatments to produce a micro and nanosurface topography. According to the release, this can stimulate mesenchymal stem cells to differentiate into osteoblast cells that can produce bone growth in the 3-D printed material.

The new material was previewed at the Annual North American Spine Society Meeting in Chicago.
