John Jane, past chairman of University of Virginia School of Medicine, passes
John Jane, MD, PhD, passed away on Friday, Sept. 18, at the age of 83 years at his home in Charlottesville, Va.
Jane graduated from the University of Chicago with a bachelor’s degree in 1951. He attended the University of Chicago School of Medicine, and received his Doctor of Medicine in 1956.
In 1969, Jane took the position of professor and chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville, Va. He remained chairman until 2006 and remained as the chairman of the residency program until 2014, according to his obituary.
Michael G. Fehlings, MD, PhD, FRCSC, FACS, chairman of AO Spine, remarked on the passing of Jane in a statement released by AOSpine.
“John made a huge contribution during his career as a skilled neurosurgeon, an inspiring teacher and mentor, a key leader in academic medicine, and as an academician. Prof. Jane’s significant contributions to academic neurosurgery were recognized by his receipt of the Cushing Medal, the highest award bestowed by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. Prof. Jane’s passing marks the end of a remarkable career. However, his legacy lives on through the work of the many neurosurgical leaders he inspired and trained, including many who contribute significantly to AOSpine,” Fehlings said in the statement.
