Researchers of this study found the incidence of ankle arthroscopy significantly increased during a 5-year period and discovered a trend in use of the procedure for women and patients younger than 50 years.

Brain C. Werner, MD, and colleagues used the PearlDiver national database to identify 15,366 ankle arthroscopy procedures, including ankle arthroscopy repair with lateral ligament repair or peroneal retinacular repair, that were performed from 2007 through 2011.

Investigators found the overall number of ankle arthroscopies performed increased significantly from 2,814 procedures in 2007 to 3,314 procedures in 2011. Women underwent ankle arthroscopy more often than men, and patients aged 30 years to 49 years underwent the most ankle arthroscopies of any age group.

In addition, researchers found the incidence of lateral ligament repair procedures involving ankle arthroplasty increased during the study period from 37.2% to 43.7%.  With regard to national regional trends, according to researchers, patients from the West and Midwest were more likely to undergo ankle arthroscopy. ‒ by Monica Jaramillo
