Ortho RTi has announced an agreement to acquire a platform technology to repair and regenerate damaged joints. The agreement, which is between Ortho RTi, Gestion Univalor and Polytechnique Montréal, will see Univalor transfer multiple patent applications and related information to Ortho RTi.
Ortho RTi also will contract Polytechnique Montréal over 3 years to implement a research and development program to advance the technologies acquired from Univalor. Designed to make therapeutic microparticles from a freeze-dried polymer, Ortho RTi plans to develop several products around the platform to aid in the regeneration of joint tissues, according to a company release.
“This platform is built on solid scientific research by leading experts in the field of joint and tissue repair,” Steve Saviuk, president of Ortho RTi, stated in the release. “The first focus will be on repair of torn meniscus in the knee. We have seen encouraging data from a recently completed pilot animal model showing the ability to stimulate meniscus healing in joints treated with our technology. Additional clinical targets include the repair of articular cartilage and of the rotator cuff.”
