Pediatric patients who underwent arthroscopic reshaping for symptomatic discoid lateral meniscus experienced satisfactory clinical outcomes after a mean of 10.1 years, according to study results.
Among 48 knees in 38 pediatric patients, researchers performed arthroscopic partial meniscectomy in 22 knees (group A), partial meniscectomy with repair in 18 knees (group B) and subtotal meniscectomy in 8 knees (group C). The researchers evaluated clinical and radiographic results preoperatively and again at final follow-up, with a mean follow-up period of 10.1 years.
The scale of Ikeuchi showed 94% of cases had excellent or good clinical results, and the median Tegner activity level was 7 at final follow-up. The researchers also observed an improvement in mean Lysholm knee score from 74.9 to 97.6 and in mean Hospital for Special Surgery score from 80.8 to 97.8.
According to radiographic evaluation findings, minor osteophytes developed in the lateral compartment of 18 knees, and moderate joint space narrowing with spur formation developed in one knee at final follow-up. The researchers also observed degenerative changes in 23% of cases in group A, in 39% of cases in group B and in 88% of cases in group C.
Study results showed significantly greater progression of degenerative changes in group C vs. groups A and B, according to the researchers. – by Casey Tingle
