Muscle inflammation susceptibility status may determine recovery potential after hip surgery

At the time of hip surgery, the status of muscle inflammation susceptibility may be a determinant of recovery potential independent of age and BMI, according to study results.

Researchers performed two integrated studies; the first compared muscle inflammation and protein metabolism signaling in elective total hip arthroplasty (THA) vs. hip fracture or trauma vs. nonsurgical controls, and the second compared two subgroups of THA patients who displayed or did not display muscle inflammation susceptibility (MuIS) based on muscle expression of tumor necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis receptor.

Results showed overt systemic and local muscle inflammation and hypermetabolism was demonstrated in patients with hip fracture / trauma, whereas patients who underwent THA had no systemic inflammation detected. However, the researchers observed local muscle inflammation in the perioperative limb in patients with MuIS, as well as suppressed muscle protein synthesis vs. patients without MuIS.

According to study results, muscle from the contralateral limb of MuIS-positive patients was unaffected. The researchers concluded their findings provided evidence of true inflammation susceptibility localized to the muscle surrounding the hip with end-stage osteoarthritis. – by Casey Tingle
