Ben Carson, MD, a retired neurosurgeon and former member of President George W. Bush’s Council on Bioethics, has officially announced he will seek the Republican nomination for the 2016 presidential election.

A pediatric neurosurgeon at John Hopkins University for 29 years, Carson completed the first and only successful separation of craniopagus (Siamese) twins joined at the back of the head in 1987, the first fully successful separation of type-2 vertical craniopagus twins in 1997 and the first successfully placed intrauterine shunt for a hydrocephalic twin, according to his official election website.

Named as one of the nation’s 20 foremost physicians and scientists by CNN and TIME in 2001, Carson was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2008 by President Bush.

Among the issues on which he will focus during his run at the presidency, Carson has targeted ObamaCare and describes the program on his website as a “looming disaster.” Instead, he supports Health Savings Accounts to drive down health care costs and protect patient choice.
