Zyga Technology recently announced the launch and first commercial use of its updated SImmetry Sacroiliac Joint Fusion System, according to a company press release.

“Minimally invasive SI [sacroiliac] joint fusion is showing a steady increase in clinical acceptance, as demonstrated through increased clinical utilization and assignment in 2015 of a Category 1 CPT code by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS),” Jim Bullock, president and CEO of Zyga Technology, said in the release. “We believe unequivocally that SI joint fusion should be founded on the proven orthopedic principles that guide spine surgery, including joint decortication and bone grafting. Our instrumentation and our proprietary SImmetry Decorticator are designed specifically for that purpose.”

The CDC lists low-back pain as the second most common cause of disability in U.S. adults, according to the press release, with reports that approximately 20% of all chronic low-back pain derives from the sacroiliac joint.

The first surgery using the updated SImmetry Sacroiliac Joint Fusion System, a minimally invasive procedure intended for conditions such as sacroiliac joint disruptions and degenerative sacroiliitis, was Brett Menmuir, MD, according to the release.
