Gokaslan named chair of neurosurgery at Warren Alpert Medical School
Brown University and Lifespan recently announced the hiring of Ziya Gokaslan, MD, as the new chair of neurosurgery in the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He will also serve as the new chief of neurosurgery at Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital, effective July 1, 2015, according to a university press release.
Gokaslan, whose clinical expertise is in treating cancers, previously served as the vice chairman of the department of neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University. He also served as a professor of neurosurgery, oncology and orthopedic surgery, and as the director of the Neurosurgical Spine Center.
“I felt that this was a great opportunity to build a world-class neurosurgical department, given that so many elements are in place already. The hospital system, as well as the university, really has made a big commitment to neuroscience in general,” Gokaslan told Spine Surgery Today.
He praised the hospital system already in place and also mentioned the advantageous geographical location of the university in terms of making it an attractive location to recruit people into the system.
His son is also currently a freshman at Brown University.
“All the other departments of neuroscience were very strong. The neurosurgery department is, as a core, very strong, but there is an opportunity to take it to another level,” Gokaslan said.
