A randomized prospective study with 4-years follow-up indicates that clinical gains from electrocautery of the patellar rim in total knee replacement without patellar resurfacing decrease with time.
“Our findings suggest that the improved clinical outcome with electrocautery denervation is not maintained at longer follow-up,” Hans-Peter van Jonbergen, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon at Deventer Hospital in the Netherlands, said when he presented results of the study. “However, based on the 1-year results, we continue to recommend the procedure as its use is safe and results in a lower prevalence of anterior knee pain, and better patient reported outcomes, at least in the short-term.”
