Stimwave Technologies Incorporated recently received U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance to market a wireless, microtechnology neuromodulation device for the relief of chronic back and leg pain.

The Stimwave Freedom Spinal Cord Stimulation System is currently being marketed in Europe and is expected to become available in the U.S. as of January 2015, according to a company press release.

At between 2 cm and 11 cm, the system is the smallest neuromodulation device available, according to the release, and uses a tiny injectable microchip device to deliver small energy pulses to surrounding nerves. This process triggers a reaction that allows the brain to remap certain pain signals.

Because the device is small enough to be implanted through a standard needle and eliminates the need for long wires being tunneled through the body and connected to a battery source, the Freedom Spinal Cord Stimulation System helps shorten the time required for the minimally invasive outpatient procedure, according to the release.
