UPMC launches initiative to educate public on available concussion treatments
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Sports Medicine Concussion Program has launched a new initiative to raise awareness about scientifically proven treatments that are currently available, according to a press release.
The Concussion Program treats more sports-related concussions than any other program nationally, with approximately 17,000 patient visits per year, according to a UPMC press release. Additionally, UPMC’s program consistently contributes to innovations in the field with nearly 20 peer-reviewed research studies published each year.
As part of the new initiative, UPMC and the Concussion Program have created a website, ReThinkConcussions.com, which offers an interactive guide for understanding concussions, with information on current therapies and myths, as well as on UPMC’s methods for treating six different types of concussions. The site also features insight into former patients’ treatment experiences.
Professional athletes, including NASCAR driver, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and Major League Baseball catcher, David Ross, will be featured in videos on the website and, in certain cases, on regional and national television to share the stories of their successful rehabilitations from concussions, according to the release.
