Tamil version of ODI questionnaire can be effective in measurement of subjective outcomes
Researchers translated and cross-culturally adapted the Oswestry Disability Index questionnaire to the Tamil language and found it delivered an accurate, reliable measurement of subjective pain and disability outcomes in Tamil-speaking patients.
The researchers recruited 30 individuals who spoke Tamil and had low back pain to assess psychometric properties of the Oswestry Disability Index Tamil-language (ODI-T) questionnaire. Study participants completed the ODI-T, Roland-Morris disability questionnaire (RMDQ), and VAS pain and disability at baseline and at 24 to 72 hours after their baseline visit.
The researchers found the ODI-T displayed a high degree of internal consistency, with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.92. Test-retest reliability was considered high, with an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.92 and a mean retest difference of 2.6 points, according to the researchers.
ODI-T scores were found to have a strong correlation with RMDQ scores, as well as those of VAS pain and disability The researchers also found moderate to low correlations between the ODI-T and lumbar range of motion.
The researchers concluded that the translated version of the ODI questionnaire delivers psychometric properties similar to the English version.
