Utrecht University and University Medical Center Utrecht announced they will begin offering a 2-year biofabrication research master’s program beginning September 2015.

The program is the first in the world allowing students to study the technology involved in creating tissue, including 3-D bioprinting, according to a press release from University Medical Center Utrecht.

As part of the multidisciplinary field of research, which requires a knowledge of chemistry, physics, biology, medicine, robotics and computer science, students in the biofabrication program will learn to develop methods for creating tissue.

The master’s program will be offered by Utrecht University and University Medical Center Utrecht, The Netherlands, and the University of Wurzburg, Germany, in collaboration with Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane and the University of Wollongong in Australia. The first year of the program will take place in Utrecht, and the second year will give students the opportunity to perform a research study and enroll in additional courses at one of the Australian universities, according to the release.

As part of the program, students will also gain access to the Utrecht Biofabrication Facility, an experimental tissue factory established earlier this year.
