Primary tibia valga is a frequent anatomic pattern in patients with valgus knees arthritis but rarely occurs in patients with varus knees, according to study results.

Researchers evaluated 97 valgus knees and 100 varus knees, taking long-leg films in weight bearing with both knees in full extension.

Study results showed 53% of the valgus knees had a tibia valga deformity, with an average tibia valga deformation of 5°, compared with 1% of knees in the varus knee groups with a deformation of 2.5°.

The extra articular tibia valga deformity contributed an average of 4.9° to the overall mechanical femorotibial alignment compared with 2.6° in the comparative group, according to the researchers.

The researchers recommended physicians take full-length leg films in valgus knees when planning for total knee arthroplasty.
