Double-bundle procedure significantly improved knee stability

Use of the double-bundle procedure during posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction significantly improved knee stability, according to study results.

Researchers randomly assigned 50 patients to undergo posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with use of tibialis anterior grafts with either the single-bundle technique or double-bundle technique. Posterior stability was determined via arthrometer, and clinical outcomes were assessed using Lysholm score, Tegner activity score and IKDC score.

The researchers observed no differences between the two groups related to patient demographic data or the time span between injury and operation.

Lysholm score was 88 in the single-bundle group and 89 in the double-bundle group, with no significant difference between the two groups, according to the researchers. A significant improvement was seen in Tegner activity score, to 6.2 in the single-bundle group and 6.8 in the double-bundle group, whereas side-to-side difference in posterior translation decreased to 4.1 mm in the single-bundle group and 2.2 mm in the double-bundle group.

Compared with the single-bundle group, the double-bundle group had a better grade distribution and had a statistically higher IKDC grade, according to the researchers.
