Spinal curvature can directly affect static balance in elderly women

Researchers have found that the shape of spinal curvatures influenced postural stability in older women.

In a study of 90 women (mean age, 70 years), researchers assessed static balance using a tensometric platform and body posture using a photogrammetric method based on the Projection Moiré method.

Results for the study were obtained using the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient test. The researchers found a statistically significant correlation between participants’ body posture and the quality of balance system response based on the corrective function of the visual system.

Static posturography demonstrated that the shape of the spinal curvature was influential on posture stability.

Correct balance control was dependent on the development of transverse planes, the spinal curvature in the sagittal plane and the maintenance of symmetry, according to the researchers.
