ISIS founding member honored at annual meeting for years of service

ORLANDO, Fla. — A long time ISIS member and one of its founding fathers was honored by his peers and received the first ISIS Lifetime Achievement award for his dedication and service at the International Spine Intervention Society Annual Meeting, here.

Charles Aprill, MD, of Kenner, La., was surprised by his peers when they went off-program on Friday morning, August 1, and honored his achievements as an interventionist, spine surgeon, and founding member of the International Spine Intervention Society (ISIS). Nikolai Bogduk, MD, a colleague and friend of Aprill, said Aprill’s dedication and achievements as a surgeon were only rivalled by his dedication as an instructor for ISIS.

The award will be named after Aprill, according to ISIS officials.

Aprill has been an instructor with ISIS since 1990 and was previously honored by the organization in 2003 for his outstanding service and dedication as a teacher. He achieved the position of Clinical Professor of Radiology and Physical Medicine/Rehabilitation at Louisiana State University Health Center. He serves as a proctor for physicians in spine interventional procedures through fellowship programs at the university.

Milton Landers, DO, an ISIS instructor, said, “[Aprill] has become best known for his contribution to ISIS education programs. He was a key participant in the first ISIS workshop and has been a member of the education committee since its conception. There were many years when only Dr. Aprill and one or two others attended the annual education committee meeting and he always shouldered much of the burden.”

Richard Derby, MD, a friend and colleague of Aprill’s, said the esteemed surgeon is at his happiest when he is surrounded by young surgeons and doctors with whom he can share his knowledge and wisdom.

Aprill received a standing ovation from the audience at the conclusion of the session.
