Comprehensive shoulder protocol provides insight into range of motion in young children

Investigators from The Netherlands found they preferred the ABC Loops protocol over the Mallet Scale, an established tool to determine shoulder range of motion, because the ABC Loops protocol includes multiple functional positions in all directions of shoulder ROM.

In an article in the May issue of Orthopaedics Today Europe, Fabian Van De Bunt, MD, and colleagues explained how the protocol helped them recently in assessing several children. Unfortunately, neither scale solved the problem of evaluating active motion in young children; however, when testable, the ABC Loops protocol provided better insight into children’s range of motion function than the Mallet Scale, De Bunt and colleagues noted.
