Heavy smoking related to wound healing, other postoperative complications
Investigators from Leeds, United Kingdom, studied patients with closed ankle fractures who smoked and matched the patients to nonsmokers with the same type of fractures. They found that more problems occurred postoperatively in the group of patients who smoked, including significantly delayed healing which was seen at 16 weeks post-treatment compared to at 9 weeks in the non-smokers.
The results of the retrospective study appear in Orthopaedics Today Europe. Click here to read the full story.
