Arthrosurface Inc. recently performed its first hammertoe correction surgeries using the new ToeMATE system, according to a company press release.

The ToeMATE system consists of two intramedullary bone screws, a morse-taper interlock pin and hand-driven preparation tools and has FDA clearance for use in small joints, allowing it to be used in both fusions and trauma reconstruction.

Touted as being able to eliminate the need for power tools and providing cost-saving opportunities, the ToeMATE system also allows the surgery to be performed in outpatient centers.

"The idea for the ToeMATE system, using two screws and a post to mate the toes together, seemed very obvious once we began working on the project,” stated Brent Brotzman, MD, who worked with Arthrosurface to develop the product, in a company press release. “Ironically, our first case required us to fix four hammertoes at once, including the small fifth toe. The fixation, targeting device and 'always new' instrumentation made it easy to perform the hammertoe correction."
