St. Jude Medical rolls out Prodigy Spinal Cord Stimulation System

St. Jude Medical Inc., has announced the CE Mark approval and European launch of the Prodigy Chronic Pain System with Burst Technology.

The product is an implantable neuromodulation system that delivers burst stimulation to reduce pain, improve patient satisfaction and allow reduced paresthesia, which is a tingling sensation associated with stimulation, according to a St. Jude Medical press release.

“The Prodigy system is a great example of our approach for innovative and alternative ways to provide relief to patients suffering from chronic pain, including those who have exhausted other treatment options or who may have lost effective therapy using traditional tonic stimulation,” Eric S. Fain, MD, group president of St. Jude Medical, in St. Paul, Minn., stated in the release.

According to the release, Burst Technology offers intermittent “bursts” of stimulation that provides an alternative method for such chronic conditions as back pain. The Prodigy neurostimulator system features a long-lasting battery even at the highest settings. It is not approved for use in the United States.
