Extended thromboprophylaxis for lower-limb injury, cast immobilization unjustified
The decision to use thromboprophylaxis and when to extend it in a patient is multifactorial. Investigators at Colchester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, in Colchester, United Kingdom, concluded that patients with lower-limb fractures treated with plaster did not require extended thromboprophylaxis if they lacked significant preexisting risk factors.
In the 52-patient study, they found a 0.45% incidence of venous thromboembolism.
