Physical activity scale for the elderly questionnaire not recommended for post-TKA evaluation

The results of this study caution against the use of the physical activity scale for the elderly questionnaire for patients after total knee arthroplasty.

“The [physical activity scale for the elderly] PASE questionnaire has several validity and reproducibility shortcomings, therefore its use is not recommended for the assessment of physical activity level in patients after [total knee arthroplasty] TKA, particularly in women,” the authors wrote in their study abstract.

The researchers recruited 50 elderly patients who underwent primary unilateral TKA and evaluated the reproducibility of the questionnaire by giving it on two occasions separated by 7 days. They investigated the construct validity of the questionnaire by comparing patients’ reported physical activity levels to those measured by accelerometry.

Study results showed acceptable reliability of the PASE questionnaire for men, but not for women. Researchers found low test agreement and construct validity for both men and women, according to study results.
