Smith & Nephew introduces cementless hip stem to US market

Smith & Nephew announced the U.S. launch of its POLARSTEM cementless stem for total hip replacement.
According to a company press release, POLARSTEM features a unique geometry and surface texture made of titanium plasma and a hydroxyapatite layer. Its proximal portion of the stem is wider to help reduce the possibility of movement downward into the bone. The distal portion of the stem is also shorter and features a narrower tip, enabling it to be easier to implant through the smaller incision used in the direct anterior approach.

POLARSTEM has been available outside the United States since 2002.
