The Department of Health and Human Services has announced $150 million in awards to fund 236 new primary health care centers in the United States. The department says the funds under the Affordable Care Act will expand care to 1.25 million more patients.

“We are committed to providing more people across the country with the quality patient-centered care they deserve,” Kathleen Sebelius, secretary for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), stated in an HHS press release. “Health centers are key partners in the improving access to quality, affordable health care services for those who need it most. With new, affordable health insurance options available under the Affordable Care Act, community health centers are also key partners in helping uninsured residents sign up for health coverage – many of whom have been locked out of the health insurance market for years.”

The award provides additional funding to community health care centers in 46 states and U.S. territories, according to information from the Health Resources and Services Administration of the HHS. According to the press release, health care centers have historically assisted in delivering health care services to areas with high rates of unemployment and these centers will help uninsured residents in these areas enroll in the health insurance exchanges under the Affordable Care Act.

“We are thrilled to be able to provide additional Affordable Care Act resources to health centers to establish new sites,” Mary K. Wakefield, PhD, RN, administrator of the HHS Health Resources and Services Administration, stated in a press release. “With these new funds, health centers will provide more individuals and families across the country with access to high quality affordable health care.”
