Trinity Orthopedics was awarded a method patent for a posterior transpedicular lumbar spine access technique.

According to a company press release, this is an important step in completing the development of the Trinity Intraosseous Transpedicular Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ITLIF) procedure.

The company announced allowance of claims associated with patent 13/160,141, described as Percutaneous Transpedicular Access, Fusion, Discectomy and stabilization system and methods.

“This method patent associated with accessing the disc space via a transpedicular approach furthers our ITLIF development efforts and provides a significant competitive advantage for our company,” James F. Marino, MD, founder of Trinity Orthopedics, stated in the press release.

The ITLIF method is anticipated to be a wholly percutaneous interbody fusion performed via a posterior approach. Unlike other methods, such as anterior, lateral or posterior ones, it will not require perineural and/or perivascular dissection, according the press release.
