Proton pump inhibitors are not a risk factor for fragility hip fracture
Proton pump inhibitors did not predispose patients to hip fractures in a Mediterranean environment, according to results of this study.
Researchers from Barcelona retrospectively reviewed 358 patients with fragility hip fractures matched with 698 controls from 2007 to 2010. The team collected data on use of proton pump inhibitors 5 years before hip fracture, sociodemographic data, body mass index, alcohol and tobacco consumption and any health conditions or drugs known as risk factors for fragility hip fracture. All patients were older than 50 years and the mean patient age was 82 years.
The researchers found the crude association between proton pump inhibitors and hip fracture was 1.44. There was no association between the continuous or discontinuous use of proton pump inhibitors and fragility hip fracture nor was there any association when adjusting for patient age or gender.
