Computer-assisted FAI surgery is accurate, but cost and effectiveness remain a question

Researchers in this study concluded that computer-assisted surgery allows hip surgeons to more accurately carry out osseous tissue resection for arthroscopic femoroacetabular impingement surgery compared to freehand techniques.
“The ideal [computer-assisted surgery] solution must be able to virtually plan a resection, guide the surgeon towards accurate execution of the plan, and facilitate post-resection assessment of the adequacy of resection,” Danyal H. Nawabi, MD, FRCS (Orth), and colleagues stated in the study abstract.
Nawabi and colleagues analyzed 13 studies on femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) surgery using the MedLine database. They included three studies on preoperative planning, 6 studies addressing navigated osseous resection and four studies examining robotic-assisted execution, according to the abstract.
“Navigation and robotic-assisted surgery can preoperatively plan and execute osseous resection with greater accuracy compared to freehand techniques, although the clinical success and cost-effectiveness has yet to be demonstrated,” Nawabi and colleagues stated.
