Platelet-rich plasma more effective than hyaluronic acid for gonarthrosis

Patients with gonarthrosis treated with autologous conditioned plasma yielded better outcomes than patients treated with hyaluronic acid, according to this study.
The researchers conducted a randomized controlled trial of 120 patients with gonarthrosis graded by Kellgren-Lawrence radiographic classification scale. They split the patients into two groups, one group of 60 patients undergoing four intra-articular autologous conditioned plasma (ACP) injections and the other group of 60 patients who received four intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid (HA). Researchers assessed patients using the WOMAC score before infiltration and at 4 weeks, 12 weeks and 24 weeks after injection.

Patients injected with ACP showed continuous improvement and better outcome scores than patients treated with HA. The patients with grade III gonarthrosis had the worst outcome scores in the HA group. The average WOMAC score was 74.85 in the HA group and 41.2 in the ACP group.
